Adkins was brought up by a single young mother in various areas of working class London. As a child, she enjoyed singing pop songs of the day and was taught to play the guitar and the clarinet. She discovered Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues singer, in her teens and began to consider a career as a musician. She was enrolled in a secondary school for the performing and visual arts that was funded by the government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. The music she wrote and recorded eventually caught the attention of record labels, and in 2006, about a year after her graduation, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
